Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman to Publish a New Series Based on Classic Dragonlance

Wilmington, NC – January 25, 2021 – Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are pleased to announce a multi-year licensing agreement with Wizards of the Coast to produce a new, three
book series of Classic Dragonlance novels.

The new trilogy will return fans to the most beloved characters from the original novels along with introducing a new strong protagonist. The books will be published by Del Rey Books, an
imprint of Penguin Random House. Although a publishing date has not yet been formally set, they anticipate announcing when the first book will be released later this year.

“We couldn’t be happier to be returning to the world we love,” says Margaret Weis. “Dragonlance is what brought Tracy and I together so many years ago. We’re thrilled to be able to do this for existing lovers of Krynn while bringing our beloved characters to a new generation of readers.”

The first Classic Dragonlance novel, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, was written by Weis and Hickman and published in 1984. Since that time, more than 190 novels have been published in the setting. Weis and Hickman have collaborated on numerous series over the last 30 years including projects set within the world of Classic Dragonlance and outside of it. Two notable series are The Death Gate Cycle and The Darksword Series, both published by Penguin Random House.

“We credit the fans of Dragonlance for making this journey possible,” says Tracy Hickman. “We wrote this series out of our thanks to them for this amazing life-long journey…and from our wish that they join us once more on the road to Solace.”

The license for the series was secured by Weis & Hickman in 2018. Their recent dispute with Wizards of the Coast was resolved at the end of 2020, with all parties pleased to have come to agreement on how best to move forward with the trilogy. All are focused on producing the best series possible and will not comment on the past dispute other than to say it has been resolved.

Watch for additional news from Weis and Hickman about Classic Dragonlance and other projects on the horizon in the coming months.

Hi Tracy, huge fan of yours since the 80’s and am excited about the new Dragonlance trilogy. I happened to be re-reading the books to get ready for those and went down the DL rabbit hole. I came upon an interview you did in 2011 where you mentioned you had a DL trilogy story in mind but it was unlikely to see the light of day based on how the property was being handled at the time. Just curious if this new trilogy was based on that same idea or was this something new that Margaret and you developed more recently (2017 I believe)? Keep up the great work!

That’s fantastic. I look forward to reading the new series and hope Wizards of the Coast will create D&D 5e modules for Krynn and Dragonlance.

My sister and I love reading both Chronicles and Legends in Cuautitlan, México. Both You and Margaret are my favourite ever since I read Dragons of Autumn Twilight … I’m really grateful for all your books, they’ve been great companions in my life.

Would love to see the original series in a mini series stream. Something like Mandalorian on Disney (doesn’t have to be Disney). You could do a 3 seasons. 1 for each book. 6-8 episodes per season. So many fans I know have been waiting for this 🙂

Any news on an expected release date? I checked at my local book store and they said July 29th 2021, but I cannot find anything to verify this.

A part of my was lost the day I finished Dragons of the Hourglass Mage and though I have read and enjoyed a great many other books since then, I always felt a great sense of loss. Crazy how a series and a world could do that to you. Anyway, this news when I heard it ignited a fire inside of me and I have become young again… So very excited for this snd so very great full.

I grew up reading these novels and falling in love with the world and language of Krynn. These books accompanied me during some tough years and I would be overjoyed to have another chance to catch up with the twins and the rest of the folks at Tika’s Inn.

Hey, I’m still trying to figure out what my hometown of Wilmington NC has to do with Dragonlance. From what I can tell none of the authors, their management, or the publishing company are located in Wilmington, so I’m very curious as to why the by line mentions Wilmington NC.

This is huge! Congrats so much. Please start writing movies!! This is going to blow LOTR away. It’s THE next huge thing! It will be bigger than the MCU.

As someone who discovered the fantasy genre via Dragon Lance I am delighted to see this happening. Especially in the classic era as I was not really engaged as much by the fifth age.

I am delighted to see such talented authors working again in the passion project and I hope it brings great success and even sparks additional opportunities for growth in RPGs or even adaptations (There is no shortage of those these days).

My congratulations to all involved, you deserve this for your hard work and we, the fans, will benefit.

Hey, another Wilmingtonian!
Maybe one of these days we can meet up and have a couple of cold ones and talk about dragons! 🙂

This is awesome news. I read both the abridged Chronicles and Legends and am definitely looking forward to read the new trilogy.

Is there a working title for the first book or the trilogy yet?

Like many I look forward to reading more adventures of the original characters. I also look back at the time when my then (1992) ten year old son finished the original trilogy and sparked his ravenous reading habits.

I can’t wait for these to come out. The original Dragonlance novels are what hooked me into D&D. I even played most of the modules in AD&D over 20 years ago. I am so glad the dispute got worked out and I get to read more Dragonlance novels.

Thank you so much! You two and your Dragonlance books, as well as Brooks Shannara books, are what got me into reading. Without your books I would never have had the aptitude and pure enjoyment of reading a book in a day. This translated into being able to cope with the demands of getting a Masters Degree. Without your books I would be a different man.

This is excellent news. I grew up reading your Dragonlance books. They were magical to me and inspired me to roleplay D&D for the rest of my life. What you and Margaret Weiss can put on pages is truly incredible. Everything you two write I consider to be a gift, like eating a special fantasy dessert. I hope your new books turn out to be amazing. I am so happy for you!!!

I hated to read when I got together with my now husband, he introduced me to Dragons of Autumn Twilight I haven’t put them down since. The dragons trilogy and twins trilogy I have gone through so many times I have had to replace them 8 times or more because I loved them so much and read them so much they would fall apart (I now have digital ones they don’t fall apart LOL). My husband and son now know the perfect gift to me is another book in the DragonLance series but you and Margaret Weis still capture my heart, mind and imagination you will forever be the reason I read as much as I do now. I just wanted to thank the both of you for being such incredible author’s and making reading fun for me.

Excellent news! Glad to hear a resolution was arrived at, and that we will be returning to Krynn very soon.

I concur. Pretty please?! A 5th Edition D&D Dragonlance setting is frequently requested and discussed in all of the Facebook groups and Reddit posts I have seen online. You have no idea how popular this topic is. I would love to see it happen, as would all of my friends.

I am the founder of a Fantasy Grounds virtual table top community of 9,000 plus active members. We await you and Margaret to get the novels out. The games will certainly be well received and marketed by the community, which beats most expensive ad company efforts and strategy. I honestly think the entire legacy of DL could be a majorly successful franchise in regards to toys, movies, rpg products, collectibles, figurines, convention themes, and more if done right. I don’t know if WoTC and Hasbro fully understand the nostalgia, the passion, and the community behind this potential. Older materials will become like gold currency. Your efforts will build a legacy, reunite the community, and create a ton of revenue if the franchise campaign is done correctly! Exciting. Also, grab Joe M. , he’s a big fan and has the passion, and LA Hollywood vibe to help you get a movie out by 2024.

This is brilliant news, I can’t wait for the new trilogy!
As a fan who read the original trilogy when it was first published, this is sooooooo exciting 😁😁😁
